Falls are one of the leading causes of serious injury among seniors — but the good news is that a large percentage of falls are preventable through simple, consistent strength and balance exercises. At Suraksha24, our physiotherapists build fall-prevention routines into almost every senior care plan. Here are five exercises that make a real difference.

1. Sit-to-stand

From a sturdy chair, practice standing up without using hands, then sitting back down slowly. This builds leg strength critical for daily balance and reduces the most common cause of falls — weak legs during transfers.

Start with 5–8 repetitions, once or twice a day, always with supervision initially.

2. Heel-to-toe walk

Walking in a straight line, placing the heel of one foot directly in front of the toes of the other, improves balance and coordination — much like a sobriety test, but for strengthening stability.

Practice near a wall or counter for support.

3. Standing marches

Holding onto a chair or counter, lift one knee at a time as if marching in place. This strengthens hip flexors, which are essential for safe walking and stair use.

Worried about a parent in India?

Talk to a care advisor no obligation, just a clear next step.

4. Ankle circles and toe raises

Weak ankles are an overlooked fall risk. Simple ankle circles and rising onto toes (while holding support) improve stability on uneven surfaces.

5. Wall push-ups

Standing arm's length from a wall, gently push in and out. This builds upper body strength, which helps in recovering balance if a stumble occurs.

A word of caution

These exercises are safe for most seniors, but anyone with recent surgery, severe osteoporosis, or cardiac conditions should only start under professional physiotherapy guidance.

How Suraksha24 supports safe mobility

Our physiotherapists visit at home, assess individual fall risk, and design a program specific to your parent's strength and medical history — not a generic routine.
